Professor Liao Qiaoyun from SISU Was Invited to Deliver a Lecture at Our School

Professor Liao Qiaoyun from School of English Studies at Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), invited by Modern Language Research Center, School of Foreign Studies at SUFE, delivered a lecture entitled “Construing Semantic Rhetorics and Linguistic Research Methodology” on April 12, 2018 in Room 426, Red Tile Building, SUFE.

Professor Liao received her PHD from SISU, and finished her postdoctoral research at Henan University. She served Sichuan International Studies University as deputy director of Graduate School, executive vice dean of College of Interpretation and Translation (CIT), dean of Research Affairs Office, and dean of Academic Affairs Office. She has been an expert assessor for the major projects of National Social Science Fund of China (NSSFC), vice chairman of China Association of Language & Education (CALE), vice chairman of China Society of Cognitive Neurolinguistics (CSCN), standing director of China Cognitive Linguistics Association (CCLA), and standing director of China Association for the Philosophy of Language (CAPL). Professor Liao has been among the first experts registered with Chongqing social science expert bank, member of editorial board of core journals for foreign language major such as Foreign Language and Literature and CSSCI journal English Studies. She was the lead researcher in two NSSFC projects, six provincial level education and research projects, and two key projects of education reform of universities in Chongqing municipality. Author of 6 monographs, she published up to 50 essays on influential journals such as Foreign Language Teaching and Research, Journal of Foreign Languages, and Modern Foreign Languages. 

Under the theoretical guidance of Philosophy of Mind, Cognitive Linguistics and Cognitive Pragmatics, the lecture, on the basis of modifying the Discourse Construal Framework in the Holistic Cognitive-Pragmatic Model (HCPM) with the Framework of Impartment and Inheritance of the Connotation and Denotation in the Model-based Pragmatic Reasoning Theory, proposes the Annotation-Denotation Relevance-Inheritance Model (ADRIM), which is applied to analysis of the construal mechanism of semantic rhetorics. Besides, Professor Liao engaged the audience in discussion on methodology of current research hotspots from perspectives of research factors, selection of topics, project application and new topics for foreign language research.

In her passionate and profound lecture abundant with enlightening examples, professor Liao offered the audience rewarding suggestions on linguistic research.
